Carbon nanotubes for oil spills clean up:

Oil spills in the sea cause many serious environmental problems worldwide. Carbon nanotube (CNT) sponges have been used to cleanup oil slicks on sea waters. CNTs are tiny tubes with diameters ranging typically from 1-50 nanometers — much narrower than the width of a human hair. CNTs were grown and formulated into a sponge like material that can adsorb many times its weight in oil [1].

In addition, unlike other sorbents, the CNT sponge was superhydrophobic and did not adsorb any water during the oil spill cleanup. An analogous CNT sponge that can soak up oil in water with unparalleled efficiency was also developed with the help from computational simulations performed at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA [2]. These studies reveal that CNT sponges are potentially useful for cleaning up oil spills from sea water.
