Assignment Overview

This semester you will read (or listen to) the book Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skoot.

Expectations. This semester students will…

• Purchase any version of the book (paper copy, e-book, audio book).
• Refer to the course schedule for reading schedule and table due dates.
• Read assigned chapter weekly and create one entry for each chapter the table (template provided).
• Complete entries prior to class in order to contribute to discussion.
• Upload tables to Blackboard by the assigned due date or it will be considered a late assignment submission.
• Engage in end of the semester group presentations and personal reflections.

Reading/Listening to the Text

Depending on your learning style you have two options: you can either read the text or listen to the audiobook. As you go through each chapter be taking brief notes on potential examples for your table. At the end of the chapter, fill out the corresponding table (provided in this document)

Filling Out the Table

Create a new document for each table. As you read, fill out one example in each chapter. Include the page number of your example for reference during class discussions and final presentation. Entries can be brief, but should be as specific as possible (proper spelling required; abbreviations and bullet points acceptable; APA format not required).

Prompt: How do personal characteristics, personal/family values, cultural beliefs, social determinants of health, and/or cultural racism affects this vulnerable person/population(s) health, well-being, or access to health care?

For each chapter:

1. Identify one (1) vulnerable individual or population (group of individuals) from the book health, wellness, or access to healthcare is compromised due to a stereotype, bias, equity issue, and/or ethical challenge.
2. Describe the stereotype, bias, or ethical challenges.
3. Identify personal characteristics, values, cultural beliefs, structural racism/oppression, and/or social determinants contribute to their experience.

Table Submissions

Fill in the tables associated with the correct chapter (e.g., Life, Death, Immortality) to organize your thoughts about the individual person/populations experience. Important Terms

Column 1: Person or Population.  Select individuals and groups of individuals from the book.

Henrietta Lacks Signature Assignment

Each group will explore a theme from the book Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks related to health inequity and/or an ethical dilemma. After the instructor assigned each group a theme, the groups will work to develop a class presentation. You are encouraged to slightly edit the template provided to include graphic and photos, but make sure the  presentation is easy to follow (e.g., Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks visually clear with bullet points, not paragraphs). Students will present their theme to the class; all members are expected to participate in the presentation. The grading rubric is in the course syllabus. Each presentation should contain the following information.

1. Explain and Evaluate the Theme.
2. Equity Issues. Explain the contributing factors of the theme/issues, Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks how it affects health and wellness, and the challenges with resolving it.
3. Ethical Dilemma. Explain the two sides of the difficult choice describing pros and cons of taking action towards either side.
4. Use examples two (2) from the book to support your explanation, if applicable.
