Written Debate Argumentation

Write an 1000-1500 word debate argumentation Students will be assigned a debate topic and stance to defend on that topic (you will not be able to pick your own debate topic, nor will your stance necessarily reflect your own opinion on the topic). Topics and stances will be uploaded to Canvas.

In this task, you will have to bring the argumentation theory from lecture 5 into practice. You will have to prepare 3 arguments that illustrate why your stance is the right one. In order to do so, you will have to study the topic and come up with some good, credible sources to build up the premises of your arguments.

Solid reasoning will turn premises into logical conclusions that provide arguments that should convince the reader of your argumentation/debating skills. Adding content covered in the rest of the course will be considered as an asset.

Grading will be based upon (see rubric):

• The number of arguments used (three main arguments)
• The structure of the arguments
• The use of basic argumentation skills (premises and conclusion follow logically & ARG can be applied)

• The use of references (use academic or at least credible sources)
• Any additional words beyond the stated word limit will not be graded.

• Student shows logical flow of each argument and able to distinguish evidence for premises (research/logic), premises, and (sub-)conclusion. For each argument: Written Debate Argumentation
  • Scheme correctness 1.2 points (deduct 0.2 per mistake)
  • Is the argument extensive and complete 0.8 points (at least 8 sub-parts, deduct 0.1 for less)

References (Total: 1.5 points)

• At least 5 convincing references cited in consistent format in the assignment (0.3 per reference)

Formatting (Total: 1.5 points)

• No spelling or grammar error (1 point)
